abstract = "O sensoriamento remoto orbital pode ser utilizado para subsidiar
os estudos urbanos, dada a possibilidade de obter imagens de
{\^a}mbito regional e informa{\c{c}}{\~o}es em tempo quase
real, o que permite a defini{\c{c}}{\~a}o dos limites e o
monitoramento urbano. Neste trabalho utilizaram-se os dados do
sensor Tem{\'a}tica Mapper (TM), em CCT, da cidade de S{\~a}o
Jos{\'e} dos Campos, SP, para: 1) identificar a melhor banda do
sensor TM, atrav{\'e}s da distancia JM, na separabilidade entre a
{\'a}rea urbana e a {\'a}rea n{\~a}o-urbana; 2) selecionar,
atrav{\'e}s da estat{\'{\i}}stica Kappa, entre as t{\'e}cnicas
de processamento digital, amplia{\c{c}}{\~a}o linear de
contraste, raz{\~a}o de canais, {\'{\i}}ndice de
vegeta{\c{c}}{\~a}o e principais componentes, a que melhor
define os limites urbanos. Foram analisados os per{\'{\i}}odos
secos (06/08/86) e chuvoso (09/12/85). Os resultados obtidos
demonstraram que a banda 1, no per{\'{\i}}odo seco, e a banda 3,
no per{\'{\i}}odo chuvoso, tiveram o melhor desempenho na
separa{\c{c}}{\~a}o das classes urbana/n{\~a}o-urbana. A
t{\'e}cnica de principais componentes apresentou os maiores
valores de concord{\^a}ncia com a imagem padr{\~a}o na
defini{\c{c}}{\~a}o do limite urbano. ABSTRACT: The orbital
remote sensing can be used to help urban studies, owing to the
possibility of obtaining images of regional ambit and quasi-real
time information, allowing the limits definition and urban
monitoring. In this work we used Thematic Mapper Sensor (TM) data,
in CCT, of Sao Jos{\'e} dos Campos city, S{\~a}o Paulo State,
to: 1) identify the best band of TM sensor, through JM distance,
in the separability between the urban and non-urban areas; 2)
select, through Kappa statistics, among the digital processing
techniques, contrast-stretch, channel ratio, vegetation index and
principal components, the one that best defines the urban limits.
The dry season (06/08/80) and the wet season (09/12/85) were
analysed. The results obtained proved that band, in the dry
season, and band 3, in the wet season, had the best performance in
the separability of urban/non-urban categories. The principal
components technique presented the great values of agreement with
the standard image in definition of the urban limit.",
